Course Overview

Our Qualsafe Level 2 Award in Principles of Risk Assessment Course delivers a minimum of 6 hours of instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 12 delegates. The course is aimed at developing their knowledge of the risk assessment process. It also provides delegates with an understanding of the main causes of work related fatalities, injuries and ill-health, the moral, legal and economic reasons for preventing accidents and ill health at work.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation and written assessment.

This course is suitable for anyone in an organisation who require to raise their awareness of the risk assessment process. While employees might not undertake risk assessments themselves, they may be asked to contribute to the process and will be expected to behave in a way that protects both the health and safety of themselves and others at all times. This qualification will make them more risk aware and improve their understanding of risk assessments.

Delegates must be at least 16 years old to attend this course and it is advised that learners have a minimum of Level 1 in Literacy or Numeracy, or equivalent due to the multiple choice examination at the end of the course.

Successful delegates will receive a Qualsafe e-certificate which will be valid for a period of 3 years from the date of the course. They will gain an understanding of the knowledge and skills required to carry out risk assessments at work, the role of risk assessment in accident and ill health prevention, the legal requirements for risk assessment, the simple process for undertaking a risk assessment, requirements for providing information about and records on the results of a risk assessment.

The agenda for the QA Level 2 Award in Principles of Risk Assessment Course includes:

1. Understand why risk assessments are necessary for maintaining and improving standards of health and safety at work:

  • State the main causes of work-related fatalities, injuries and ill health
  • Outline the moral, legal and economic reasons for preventing accidents and ill health at work
  • Define key terms associated with risk assessment in the context of health and safety at work, including: accident, near miss, accident triangle, hazard, risk, risk assessment, risk control hierarchy, suitable and sufficient and competence
  • Outline the role of risk assessment in accident and ill health prevention

2. Understand the principles of risk assessment:

  • Outline the legal requirements for risk assessment
  • Describe a simple process for undertaking a risk assessment
  • Give examples of occupational, environmental and human factors that can affect the level of risk from hazards at work
  • Outline a method that can be used to prioritise risks
  • Outline the requirements for providing information about, and records on the results of a risk assessment
