Introducing the new IPAF Harness Awareness, User & Inspection Courses!
Posted: 3rd July 2023
It is crucial for individuals operating boom-type MEWPs to have awareness and understanding of proper harness usage to ensure their safety during any and all work at height.
In an effort to promote this, IPAF has provided three new harness courses to cater to different elements of Harness use. These courses are highly recommended for anyone utilising boom-type MEWPs, but what can each course offer you? See below for more information on each of the new training courses!
HARNESS AWARENESS (HA) COURSE
Completed either in-person at our Tonbridge training centre, or remotely via e-Learning, the Harness Awareness (HA) theory course provides delegates with the essential knowledge to select, monitor, manage, and plan the correct use of Harnesses and Lanyards for use in a MEWP (Mobile Elevated Work Platform). This course is ideal for anyone who will be directly overseeing the usage of safety harnesses on MEWPs, but not wearing one themselves, such as managers, planners, safety professionals, and supervisors.
HARNESS USER (HU) COURSE
The Harness User (HU) practical course is run exclusively at our Tonbridge training centre and requires that the delegate has successfully completed the Harness Awareness course prior to taking the module. The course evaluates the delegate’s practical application of the knowledge gained in the IPAF Harness Awareness (HA) theory course, and typical delegates are usually MEWP operators.
HARNESS INSPECTION (HI) COURSE
The Harness Inspection (HI) practical training is also run exclusively at our Tonbridge training centre and requires that the delegate has successfully completed both the Harness Awareness & Harness User courses prior to sitting this course.
The HI course provides the essential knowledge and practical application for the statutory formal inspection of Harnesses, Lanyards and associated ancillary PFPE equipment for use in a MEWP. The typical delegates for this course primarily serve as company harness/safety inspectors.
COURSE DURATION
The duration of each course depends on the chosen course(s) and format. For instance, the Harness Awareness (HA) course alone, taken as e-Learning, can be completed remotely in half a day or less.
Delegates opting for both the Harness Awareness (HA) and Harness User (HU) courses can take them consecutively in-person at our Tonbridge training centre under the guidance of an instructor. This option typically takes half a day.
Delegates taking the HI Course must have previously passed the HA and HU courses. They can then undertake the HI Course in-person at our Tonbridge training centre, guided by an instructor, which also takes a half day.
Delegates undertaking all three courses will do so consecutively and the total duration will be a full 8 hours of instruction.
QUALIFICATIONS
Upon successful completion of the course(s), delegates holding a valid Powered Access License (PAL Card) will have the relevant qualification(s) digitally added to their card. These qualifications can be accessed through the IPAF ePAL app. Delegates without a valid PAL Card will receive a digital certificate, which can also be accessed via the IPAF ePAL app.
