Course Overview

Our NPORS industrial Counterbalance Lift Truck Novice Course is designed to provide delegates with the skills needed to operate an industrial lift truck safely and efficiently, carry out a pre-use inspection & recall and explain the causes of truck and load instability.

The course can instruct up to a maximum of 3 delegates per instructor and consists of an instructor led training room presentation, multiple choice assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is for operational site use which is aimed at those who will be required or wish to operate an Industrial Counterbalance Lift Truck and have limited or no experience.

Since the inspection, operation and use of an industrial counterbalance lift truck can be physically demanding, users should be physically fit and in good health. A good understanding of spoken and written English is required.

Successful delegates will be issued with a relevant NPORS Operators Card which is valid for 5 years, unless they are completing a CSCS card which will be valid for 2 years, delegates will then need to complete a relevant NVQ within the 2 years.

Important Information: All delegates must bring photo identification, this can include a valid Passport or Driving Licence.


The course will cover the following content:

  • Have a basic understanding of your industry, the dangers of working in your industry and their responsibilities as an operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer's handbook for the particular Forklift Truck to be used
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for forklift Truck use
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Controls and instruments
  • Weight assessment / Stability Factors
  • Starting, moving and stopping the truck
  • Handling laden and unladen pallets
  • Operation of hydraulic controls
  • Stacking/de-stacking – free standing and in racking at various heights
  • Loading and Unloading Procedures
  • Operate the Forklift Truck safely and efficiently
  • Be able to establish effective communication methods
  • Environmental considerations
  • Carry out all end of shift checks
