Course Overview

The Site Management Safety Training Scheme – Refresher course aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace for those who have previously attended the SMSTS Five Day Course. The course includes a wide range of topics, many building on the previous five-day course programme.

The course covers all relevant legislation and other aspects which affect safe working in the building, construction and civil engineering industries. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures, and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce. The SMSTS course is endorsed by Build UK as the standard training for all construction managers.

CITB recommend that this course is run over two consecutive days. The courses run frequently at our Kent Training Centre, or we can accommodate in-house courses at your chosen venue. Contact us on 0333 666 0555 for more information and preferential rates.

Assessment will be by an exam paper and the completion of a case study exercise. The examination demonstrates to external bodies that the certificate is only awarded to successful delegates following both an assessment and examination. Delegates are expected to be interactive during the course and there is also a mandatory toolbox talk to be completed.

At the end of the theory session on day five, delegates will take a short 20 question multiple choice and 5 short written question test. There are 5 safety critical questions that must be answered correctly. For the last 10 minutes of the examination, delegates may use their books for reference.

Please note that the course price includes a same day resit, in the event that delegates do not correctly answer a safety critical question.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation and written assessment.

The SMSTS Refresher Course is only for delegates who have previously passed the five-day construction Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) or subsequent refresher course, and hold a valid SMSTS certificate. Evidence must be provided of their eligibility in order to book onto this course.

Delegates must be competent in English at site manager level.

Upon successful completion of this course each delegate will receive a CITB Construction Skills e-Certificate of Training, valid for a period of 5 years from the course date. This is a two-day course. Delegates are required to complete the full course (15 hours) to be eligible for certification.

To remain certified in this area, you will need to take a refresher course before the expiry date on your certificate, otherwise the full CITB SMSTS Course will need to be retaken again.

The agenda for the CITB SMSTS Refresher Course includes:
