Course Overview

Our L.A Stepladder & Step Stools Inspection Course delivers a minimum of 4 hours of instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 8 delegates, providing training for users, supervisors and managers wanting to equip themselves with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to formally inspect step ladders and step stools legally and safely. Written with the guidance from the UK's leading experts on ladder manufacture, maintenance and safety, the Ladder Association scheme addresses all the issues raised by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and, more recently, the Work and Height Regulations 2005.

Under the regulations every person in the chain leading up to, and including, the final user, has a duty of care to both themselves and others to know and understand the practical implications of working safety at height. Demonstration of competence is a key requirement of the new regulations and successful completion of the L.A Stepladder & Step Stool Inspection Course provides proof of such competence.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is aimed at personnel who are or will be responsible for the formal inspection of step ladders and step stools in the work place.

Since the safe use of step ladders and step stools requires that delegates consult safety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, English literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any ladder user. In addition, delegates should be fit and capable of lifting and carrying step ladders and step stools.

Please note that delegates will be expected to work at height whilst climbing either step ladders and step stools for the practical, so please ensure delegates are in good health and do not have a fear of heights that may preclude them from taking part in the practical assessment.

Successful delegates will receive a Ladder Association Step Ladder & Step Stools Inspection e-certification valid for a period of 5 years from the date of the course.

The agenda for the L.A Step Ladder and Step Stools Inspection course includes:

  • The law/standards relating to stepladders and step stools
  • When it’s right to inspect a stepladder or step stool
  • How to carry out a formal inspection
  • How to record the inspection and any faults
  • What action to take if faults are identified
  • How to accurately record details of stepladders and step stools used within the workplace
