Course Overview

Our L.A Ladder & Stepladder Combined User & Inspection Training Course delivers a minimum of 7 hours of instruction and is designed to instruct up to a maximum of 8 delegates, providing training for users, supervisors and managers wanting to equip themselves with the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to use and formally inspect ladders and step ladders legally and safely.

Written with the guidance from the UK's leading experts on ladder manufacture, maintenance and safety, the Ladder Association scheme addresses all the issues raised by the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and, more recently, the Work and Height Regulations 2005.

Under the regulations every person in the chain leading up to, and including, the final user, has a duty of care to both themselves and others to know and understand the practical implications of working safety at height. Demonstration of competence is a key requirement of the new regulations and successful completion of the L.A Ladder and Step Ladder Training Course provides proof of such competence.

Delegates are required to attend and successfully pass the L.A Ladder & Step Ladder User Course prior to attending the Inspection Course.

This course consists of a training room lecture, DVD presentation, written assessment, practical training and assessment.

This course is aimed at personnel who are or will be responsible for the formal inspection of Ladders and Step Ladders in the work place.

Since the safe use of ladders and step ladders requires that delegates consult safety notices and read and thoroughly understand the manufacturer’s instruction manual, English literacy and language comprehension are important requirements for any ladder user. In addition, delegates should be fit and capable of lifting and carrying ladders and step ladders.

Please note that delegates will be expected to work at height whilst climbing a ladder for the practical, so please ensure delegates are in good health and do not have a fear of heights that may preclude them from taking part in the practical assessment.

Successful delegates will receive a Ladder Association Ladder & Step Ladder Inspection e-certification valid for a period of 5 years from the date of the course. They will gain an understanding of current relevant legislation and will be able to carry out formal inspections of Ladders & Step Ladders.

The agenda for the L.A Ladder & Stepladder Inspection course includes:

  • Accurately record details of ladders
  • Identify component parts using industry standard naming conventions
  • Thoroughly inspect ladders and stepladders, and identify safety critical faults
  • Record your findings in accordance with statutory requirements (as outlined in PUWER ACOPs 163)
  • Recommend action to be taken if faults found
  • Review the relevant legislation, guidance and approved code of practice (ACOPs) governing the inspection of ladders and stepladders
  • Understanding the difference between pre-use and formal inspections
  • Identify common manufacturing processes used, and their implications for the cost-effectiveness of repairs
  • Understanding the difference between maintenance and repairs and who is allowed to do them
  • Utilising the correct methods of disposal of equipment at the end of its working life
